Girls Finish Top 8 State In 4A State

Last Friday morning, the girl’s basketball season ended with a 44-60 loss to Kentridge. The Papermakers put a scare into the defending state champions by playing one of their best quarters of the year jumping out to a 20-13 lead after the 1st quarter. The girls continued to play solid and lead by 6 at halftime. Kentridge size took over in the 3rd quarter and girls could never recover. Three players scored in double-figures led by Courtney Clemmer with 14, followed by Marianna Payne with 13 and Haley Hanson with 11. The girls would like to thank all the students and staff members who supported them through the year. For the second year in-a-row, the girls finished as one of the top 8 teams in the state. Congratulations Ladies! Picture here, Camas’s Courtney Clemmer (33) hits a underhanded layup past Kentridge’s Jaquaya Miller (44) during a WIAA 4A State Hardwood Classic’s 3rd round basketball game at the Tacoma Dome on March 2, 2018 in Tacoma. FIRST Robotics Atlas Robot

Our FIRST Robotics Team 2471 has been working hard to design and build a robot for the 2018 competition season. Please take a moment to click the link below to see our new robot, Atlas. Our team currently has 42 students from Camas, Hockinson, and Washougal High Schools. We get 6 weeks to design, build, and program a robot for competition. Each year, Team Mean Machine has risen to the challenge, and we’ve been to the World’s competition for the last 7 years. There is also a business side to our team. These students manage our budget, interface with the community and sponsors, and help ensure our team runs smoothly.

I’m so proud of these students and grateful to the mentors that really make this possible. Thanks also to our generous sponsors.  I’m sure you’ll agree after watching the video that we are ready for competition season. Look for competition dates in upcoming announcements and credit for the video goes to CHS Student Hunter Colwell who produced the excellent Robotics reveal video! – Coach Sara Gondek

Ali Coker Wins Green Apple Award

CHS’s Ali Coker has been named a Green Apple Award winner for Clark County! The award recognizes exceptional “green” educators in the area, all of whom will be recognized at a Feb. 22 ceremony. Ali is a Biology and Forensic Science teacher, as well as the Green Team Advisor. She was nominated by Director of Educational Resources Steve Marshall and selected for her commitment to reduce harmful environmental impacts, educate others, and give back to the community.

Ali also had the opportunity to visit San Diego this past month to attend a national conference as part of the Murdock Partners in Science Grant. She presented her summer research on how nutrients impact phytoplankton growth in the Columbia River and shared how performing that research has impacted her science classroom. In the audience were other teachers as well as professors and scientists in the field.
