Maton Repeats 4A 1600 State Champion

TACOMA — No doubt, Daniel Maton says: he feels the pressure of being a defending Class 4A state champion. A two-time defending champion, in fact.

“I was really nervous; it’s terrible,” the Camas High junior said. “People expect more out of you and high expectations. You’ve got to push harder and people expect you to go faster.”

Faster, Maton did Thursday in the 4A boys 1,600 meters event final as part of the opening day of the 4A/3A/2A state track and field championships. His winning time of 4 minutes, 7.50 seconds at Mount Tahoma High School beats his previous-best time of 4:11.24 he ran to win last year’s state title. Read more at The Columbian

Ahoy, Mrs. Dean!

CHS’s Environmental Science Teacher Jennifer Dean is one of 35 teachers from across the nation selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to be a part of its Teacher at Sea program, which provides educators with real-world science research experiences. The program had nearly 300 teachers vying for the opportunity to assist scientists in research, and Dean won one of the coveted spots.

She will embark on a 13-day endeavor to survey six marine-protected areas off Florida’s Atlantic coast on the NOAA Ship Pisces, a fisheries and oceanographic research vessel that sets sail on May 12, from Mayport, Florida.

She had considered becoming a research scientist before going into education, Dean said, but the birth of her first child changed her career trajectory.

Still, Dean said she loves doing research outside of the classroom because the nature of science is based on the discovery of new things. Read more at the CW Post Record

Leadership & Earth Day Clean Up

Pictured here are Camas High School and Skyridge Leadership students who spend the day this past Saturday doing sidewalk & landscape bed clean-up, weeding, planting and placing barkdust in the downtown area of Camas in celebration of Earth Day.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events in more than 193 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

In 1970 the first Earth Day celebrations took place in two thousand colleges and universities, roughly ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities across the United States. More importantly, it “brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.”It now is observed in 192 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network, chaired by the first Earth Day 1970 organizer Denis Hayes, according to whom Earth Day is now “the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year.”Environmental groups have sought to make Earth Day into a day of action to change human behavior and provoke policy changes.
